Parable of the sower

13:1 That same day, Jesus, going out of the house, sat by the sea. [n.1078]
13:1 In illo die exiens Iesus de domo, sedebat secus mare. [n. 1078]
13:2 And great multitudes gathered together about him, so that he went up into a boat and sat there, and all the multitude stood on the shore. [n. 1080]
13:2 Et congregatae sunt ad eum turbae multae, ita ut in naviculam ascendens sederet, et omnis turba stabat in littore, [n. 1080]
13:3 And he told them many things in parables, saying: behold, the sower went out to sow. [1082]
13:3 et locutus est eis multa in parabolis, dicens: ecce exiit qui seminat seminare, [n. 1082]
13:4 And while he was sowing, some fell by the way side and the birds of the air came and ate them up. [n. 1088]
13:4 et dum seminat, quaedam ceciderunt secus viam, et venerunt volucres, et comederunt ea. [1088]
13:5 And some others fell upon stony ground, where they did not have much earth, and they sprang up immediately, because they had no deep soil. [n. 1089]
13:5 Alia autem ceciderunt in petrosa, ubi non habebant terram multam, et continuo exorta sunt, quia non habebant altitudinem terrae; [n. 1089]
13:6 But when the sun came up they were scorched, and because they had no root, they withered away. [n. 1090]

13:7 And others fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. [n. 1090]

13:8 And others fell upon good ground, and they produced fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold. [n. 1091]
13:8 Alia autem ceciderunt in terram bonam, et dabant fructum, aliud centesimum, aliud sexagesimum, aliud trigesimum. [n. 1091]
13:9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear. [n. 1093]

13:10 And his disciples came and said to him: why do you speak to them in parables? [n. 1098]
13:10 Et accedentes discipuli dixerunt ei: quare in parabolis loqueris eis? [n. 1098]
13:11 He answered and said to them: because it is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but it is not given to them. [n. 1101]
13:11 Qui respondens ait illis: quia vobis datum est nosse mysterium regni caelorum, illis autem non est datum. [n. 1101]
13:12 For he who has, to him it will be given, and he will abound; but he who has not, from him will be taken away even that which he has. [n. 1102]
13:12 Qui enim habet, dabitur ei, et abundabit; qui autem non habet, et quod habet, auferetur ab eo. [n. 1102]
13:13 Therefore, I speak to them in parables, because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. [n. 1107]
13:13 Ideo in parabolis loquor eis, quia videntes non vident, et audientes non audiunt, neque intelligunt, [n. 1107]
13:14 And the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled in them, which said: by hearing you will hear, and will not understand: and seeing you will see, and will not perceive. [n. 1109]
13:14 et adimpletur in eis prophetia Isaiae dicentis: auditu audietis, et non intelligetis, et videntes videbitis, et non videbitis. [n. 1109]
13:15 For the heart of this people has grown gross, and with their ears they have been dull of hearing, and their eyes they have shut: lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. [n. 1111]
13:15 Incrassatum est enim cor populi huius, et auribus graviter audierunt, et oculos suos clauserunt, ne quando videant oculis, et auribus audiant, et corde intelligant, et convertantur, et sanem eos. [n. 1111]
13:16 But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. [n. 1115]
13:16 Vestri autem beati oculi, quia vident, et aures vestrae, quia audiunt. [n. 1115]
13:17 For, amen, I say to you, many prophets and just men have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the things that you hear and have not heard them. [n. 1117]
13:17 Amen quippe dico vobis, quia multi prophetae et iusti cupierunt videre quae videtis, et non viderunt, et audire quae auditis, et non audierunt. [n. 1117]
13:18 Hear therefore the parable of the sower. [n. 1120]
13:18 Vos ergo audite parabolam seminantis. [n. 1120]
13:19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, there comes the wicked one, and snatches away that which was sown in his heart; this is he who received the seed by the way side. [n. 1122]
13:19 Omnis qui audit verbum regni, et non intelligit, venit malus, et rapit quod seminatum est in corde eius; hic est qui secus viam seminatus est. [n. 1122]
13:20 And he who received the seed upon stony ground is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. [n. 1125]
13:20 Qui autem super petrosa seminatus est, hic est qui verbum audit, et continuo cum gaudio accipit illud: [n. 1125]
13:21 However, he has no root in himself, but endures only for a time, and when there comes tribulation and persecution because of the word, he quickly falls away. [n. 1127]
13:21 non habet autem in se radicem, sed est temporalis. Facta autem tribulatione et persecutione propter verbum, continuo scandalizatur. [n. 1127]
13:22 And he who received the seed among thorns is he who hears the word, and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches chokes up the word, and he becomes fruitless. [n. 1129]
13:22 Qui autem seminatus est in spinis, hic est qui verbum Dei audit, et sollicitudo saeculi istius, et fallacia divitiarum suffocat verbum, et sine fructu efficitur. [n. 1129]
13:23 But he who received the seed upon good ground, is he who hears the word, and understands, and bears fruit; and one yields a hundredfold, and another sixty, and another thirty. [n. 1131]
13:23 Qui vero in terram bonam seminatus est, hic est qui audit verbum, et intelligit, et fructum affert, et facit aliud quidem centesimum, aliud autem sexagesimum, aliud vero trigesimum. [n. 1131]
1077. Above the evangelical teaching was set forth, and the adversaries were refuted; here he shows the power of the evangelical teaching. And
1077. Supra proposita est doctrina evangelica, et confutati sunt adversarii, hic ostendit virtutem evangelicae doctrinae; et
first, by words;

second, by the deeds (Matt 14).

And concerning the first,

first, the circumstances of the teaching are set down;
primo ponuntur circumstantiae doctrinae;
second, Christ’s teaching;
secundo Christi doctrina;
third, the effect.

The second is at behold the sower went out to sow; the third, at have you understood all these things? (Matt 13:51).
Secunda ibi ecce exiit qui seminat seminare; tertia ibi intellexistis haec omnia?
And first, he sets down four circumstances, namely the place, the time, the arrangement of the hearers, and the position of the one speaking.
Et primo ponit quatuor circumstantias, scilicet locum, tempus, dispositionem audientium et dispositionem loquentis.
1078. He touches on the time when he says, the same day. From which one is given to understand that he touches upon the order of history, for it cannot be understood in another way than that the day is taken for time.
1078. Tempus tangit, cum dicit in die illo. Ex quo datur intelligi quod tangit ordinem rei gestae. Aliter enim non posset intelligi, nisi ly die sumatur pro tempore.
1079. Then the circumstance of place is touched upon: He sat by the sea. And this can be explained according to a literal explanation and a mystical one.
1079. Deinde tangitur circumstantia loci, sedebat secus mare et cetera. Et hoc potest exponi secundum expositionem litteralem et mysticam.
