Lecture 1 Lectio 1 Moral Precepts Praecepta Moralia 19:1 And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these words, that he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judea, beyond Jordan. [n. 1546] 19:3 And there came to him the Pharisees tempting him, and saying: is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? [n. 1547] 19:3 Et accesserunt ad eum Pharisaei tentantes eum, et dicentes: si licet homini dimittere uxorem suam quacumque ex causa? [n. 1547] 19:4 Answering, he said to them: have you not read, that he who made man from the beginning, made them male and female? [n. 1548] 19:4 Qui respondens ait eis: non legistis, quia qui fecit ab initio, masculum et foeminam fecit eos? [n. 1548] 19:5 And said: for this cause will a man leave father and mother, and will cleave to his wife, and they two will be in one flesh. [n. 1552] 19:5 Et dixit: propter hoc dimittet homo patrem et matrem, et adhaerebit uxori suae, et erunt duo in carne una. [n. 1552] 19:6 Therefore, now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder. [n. 1553] 19:6 Itaque iam non sunt duo, sed una caro. Quod ergo Deus coniunxit, homo non separet. [n. 1553] 19:7 They say to him: why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce, and to put away? [n. 1555] 19:7 Dicunt illi: quid ergo Moyses mandavit dari libellum repudii, et dimittere? [n. 1555] 19:8 He said to them: because Moses by reason of the hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. [n. 1556] 19:8 Ait illis: quoniam Moyses ad duritiam cordis vestri permisit vobis dimittere uxores vestras: ab initio autem non fuit sic. [n. 1556] 19:9 And I say to you, that whoever puts away his wife, unless it be for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries her who is put away, commits adultery. [n. 1558] 19:9 Dico autem vobis, quia quicumque dimiserit uxorem suam, nisi ob fornicationem, et aliam duxerit, moechatur; et qui dimissam duxerit, moechatur. [n. 1558] 19:10 His disciples say to him: if the case of a man with his wife is so, it is not expedient to marry. [n. 1562] 19:10 Dicunt ei discipuli eius: si ita est causa homini cum uxore, non expedit nubere. [n. 1562] 19:11 He said to them: all men do not take this word, but they to whom it is given. [n. 1564] 19:12 For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men, and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He who can take, let him take it. [n. 1573] 19:14 But Jesus said to them: allow the little children, and do not forbid them to come to me, for the kingdom of heaven is for such. [n. 1577] 19:15 And when he had imposed hands upon them, he departed from there. [n. 1578] 19:15 Et cum imposuisset eis manus, abiit inde. [n. 1578] 19:16 And behold one came and said to him: good Master, what good should I do that I may have life everlasting? [n. 1579] 19:16 Et ecce unus accedens ait illi: Magister bone, quid boni faciam, ut habeam vitam aeternam? [n. 1579] 19:17 He said to him: why do you ask me concerning good? One is good, God. But if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments. [n. 1581] 19:17 Qui dixit ei: quid me interrogas de bono? Unus est bonus, Deus. Si autem vis ad vitam ingredi, serva mandata. [n. 1581] 19:18 He said to him: which? And Jesus said: do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness. [n. 1584] 19:18 Dicit illi: quae? Iesus autem dixit: non homicidium facies, non adulterabis, non facies furtum, non falsum testimonium dices, [n. 1584] 19:19 Honor your father and your mother and, love your neighbor as yourself. [n. 1584] 19:19 honora patrem et matrem et diliges proximum tuum sicut teipsum. [n. 1584] 19:20 The young man said to him: all these I have kept from my youth, what is still wanting to me? [n. 1586] 19:20 Dicit illi adolescens: omnia haec custodivi a iuventute mea, quid adhuc mihi deest? [n. 1586] 19:21 Jesus said to him: if you will be perfect, go sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come follow me. [n. 1589] 19:21 Ait illi Iesus: si vis perfectus esse, vade, vende omnia quae habes, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in caelo, et veni, sequere me. [n. 1589] 19:22 And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad, for he had great possessions. [n. 1599] 19:22 Cum audisset autem adolescens verbum, abiit tristis: erat enim habens multas possessiones. [n. 1599] 19:23 Then Jesus said to his disciples: amen, I say to you, that a rich man will hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. [n. 1600] 19:23 Iesus autem dixit discipulis suis: amen dico vobis, quia dives difficile intrabit in regnum caelorum. [n. 1600] 19:24 And again I say to you: it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. [n. 1602] 19:24 Et iterum dico vobis: facilius est camelum per foramen acus transire, quam divitem intrare in regnum caelorum. [n. 1602] 19:25 And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered very much, saying: who then can be saved? [n. 1603] 19:25 Auditis autem his, discipuli mirabantur valde, dicentes: quis ergo poterit salvus esse? [n. 1603] 19:26 And Jesus looking, said to them: with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. [n. 1605] 19:26 Aspiciens autem Iesus dixit illis: apud homines hoc impossibile est; apud Deum autem omnia possibilia sunt. [n. 1605] 19:27 Then Peter answering, said to him: behold we have left all things, and have followed you; what therefore will we have? [n. 1607] 19:27 Tunc respondens Petrus dixit ei: ecce nos reliquimus omnia, et secuti sumus te, quid ergo erit nobis? [n. 1607] 19:28 And Jesus said to them: amen, I say to you, that you, who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man will sit on the seat of his majesty, you also will sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel. [n. 1609] 19:28 Iesus autem dixit illis: amen dico vobis, quod vos qui secuti estis me, in regeneratione, cum sederit Filius hominis in sede maiestatis suae, sedebitis et vos super sedes duodecim, iudicantes duodecim tribus Israel. [n. 1609] 19:29 And every one who has left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will possess life everlasting. [n. 1616] 19:29 Et omnis qui reliquit domum, vel fratres, aut sorores, aut patrem, aut matrem, aut uxorem, aut filios, aut agros propter nomen meum, centuplum accipiet, vitam aeternam possidebit. [n. 1616] 19:30 And many who are first, will be last, and the last will be first. [n. 1619] 19:30 Multi autem erunt primi novissimi, et novissimi primi [n. 1619] 1543. Above, it was shown how one comes to eternal life by the common way; here he teaches how one comes by the way of perfection, which is touched upon with regard to two things: with regard to abstinence, and with regard to voluntary poverty. 1543. Supra ostensum est quomodo veniendum est ad vitam aeternam per communem viam; hic docet quomodo veniendum est per viam perfectionis, quae tangitur quantum ad duo: quantum ad continentiam, et quantum ad paupertatem voluntariam. Concerning the first, he does two things: Circa primum duo facit. first, he treats of the coming; Primo agit de adventu; second, of abstinence, at his disciples say to him. secundo de continentia, ibi dicunt ei discipuli eius et cetera.
