Lecture 1 Lectio 1 Entrance into Jerusalem Introitus in Ierusalem 21:1 And when they drew near to Jerusalem, and had come to Bethphage, unto Mount Olivet, then Jesus sent two disciples, [n. 1681] 21:1 Et cum appropinquassent Ierosolymis, et venissent Bethphage ad Montem Oliveti, tunc Iesus misit duos discipulos, [n. 1681] 21:2 saying to them: go into the village that is over against you, and immediately you will find an ass tied, and a colt with her; loose them and bring them to me. [n. 1685] 21:2 dicens eis: ite in castellum quod contra vos est, et statim invenietis asinam alligatam, et pullum cum ea; solvite et adducite mihi. [n. 1685] 21:3 And if any man will say anything to you, say that the Lord has need of them, and immediately he will let them go. [n. 1686] 21:3 Et, si quis vobis aliquid dixerit, dicite quia Dominus his opus habet, et confestim dimittet eos. [n. 1686] 21:4 Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet, saying: [n. 1688] 21:4 Hoc autem factum est, ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem: [n. 1688] 21:5 tell the daughter of Zion: behold your king comes to you, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of her that is used to the yoke. [n. 1689] 21:5 dicite filiae Sion: ecce rex tuus venit tibi mansuetus, et sedens super asinam, et pullum filium subiugalis. [n. 1689] 21:6 And going, the disciples did as Jesus commanded them. [n. 1690] 21:8 And a very great multitude spread their garments on the way, and others cut boughs from the trees, and strewed them in the way. [n. 1691] 21:9 And the multitudes that went before and that followed, cried, saying: hosanna to the Son of David, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, hosanna in the highest. [n. 1693] 21:10 And when he had come into Jerusalem, the whole city was moved, saying: who is this? [n. 1694] 21:10 Et cum intrasset Ierosolymam, commota est universa civitas dicens: quis est hic? [n. 1694] 21:11 And the people said: this is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth of Galilee. [n. 1694] 21:11 Populi autem dicebant: hic est Iesus propheta a Nazareth Galilaeae. [n. 1694] 21:12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all those who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the chairs of those who sold doves. [n. 1695] 21:12 Et intravit Iesus in templum Dei, et eiiciebat omnes vendentes et ementes in templo, et mensas nummulariorum et cathedras vendentium columbas evertit. [n. 1695] 21:13 And he said to them: it is written, my house will be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves. [n. 1700] 21:13 Et dicit eis: scriptum est: domus mea, domus orationis vocabitur; vos autem fecistis illam speluncam latronum. [n. 1700] 21:14 And there came to him the blind and the lame in the temple; and he healed them. [n. 1701] 21:14 Et accesserunt ad eum caeci et claudi in templo, et sanavit eos. [n. 1701] 21:15 And the chief priests and scribes, seeing the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying: hosanna to the Son of David; were moved with indignation, [n. 1702] 21:15 Videntes autem principes sacerdotum et scribae mirabilia quae fecit, et pueros clamantes in templo, et dicentes, hosanna Filio David, indignati sunt, [n. 1702] 21:16 and said to him: do you hear what they say? And Jesus said to them: yes, have you never read: out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings you have perfected praise? [n. 1704] 21:16 et dixerunt ei: audis quid isti dicunt? Iesus autem dicit eis: utique. Numquam legistis, quia ex ore infantium et lactantium perfecisti laudem? [n. 1704] 21:17 And leaving them, he went out of the city into Bethania, and remained there. [n. 1708] 21:17 Et relictis illis abiit foras extra civitatem in Bethaniam, ibique mansit. [n. 1708] 21:18 And in the morning, returning into the city, he was hungry. [n. 1710] 21:18 Mane autem revertens in civitatem esuriit, [n. 1710] 21:19 And seeing a certain fig tree by the way side, he came to it, and found nothing on it but leaves only, and he said to it: may no fruit grow on you from now on and forever. And immediately the fig tree withered away. [n. 1712] 21:19 et videns fici arborem unam secus viam, venit ad eam, et nihil invenit in ea nisi folia tantum; et ait illi: numquam ex te fructus nascatur in sempiternum. Et arefacta est continuo ficulnea. [n. 1712] 21:20 And the disciples seeing it wondered, saying: how is it presently withered away? [n. 1715] 21:20 Et videntes discipuli mirati sunt dicentes: quomodo continuo aruit? [n. 1715] 21:21 And Jesus answering, said to them: amen, I say to you, if you have faith, and do not stagger, not only this, of the fig tree, will you do, but also if you say to this mountain: take up and cast yourself into the sea, it will be done. [n. 1717] 21:21 Respondens autem Iesus ait eis: amen dico vobis, si habueritis fidem, et non haesitaveritis, non solum de ficulnea facietis, sed et si monti huic dixeritis: tolle, et iacta te in mare, fiet. [n. 1717] 21:22 And all things whatever that you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive. [n. 1719] 21:22 Et omnia quaecumque petieritis in oratione credentes, accipietis. [n. 1719] 1680. Above, the Gospel of Matthew was divided into three parts: in the first he set forth the entrance of Christ into the world, up to the third chapter; second, concerning his progress in the world; in the third, concerning his departure. Therefore, the first two parts being finished, here the third is treated. 1680. Supra divisum est Evangelium Matthaei in tres partes, in prima ponit introitum Christi in mundum usque ad tertium capitulum; secundo de processu in mundo; in tertia de egressu. Completis igitur duabus primis partibus, hic agitur de tertia. And it is divided: for Et dividitur: quia first, he treats of certain preparatory things; primo agitur de quibusdam praeambulis; second, of Christ’s passion (Matt 26). secundo de passione Christi, et hoc XXVI capitulo. Et First, the provocation of the persecutors is set out; primo ponitur provocatio persecutorum; second, the strengthening of the disciples (Matt 24). secundo confortatio discipulorum, et hoc XXIV. He had strengthened the disciples by foretelling the future. From there, certain men were provoked by his glory, which they envied; this is treated in this chapter. Some were provoked by his knowledge (Matt 22). Confortaverat discipulos praedicens futura. Inde provocati fuerunt quidam per eius gloriam, cui invidebant; de hoc agitur in isto capitulo. Aliqui per eius scientiam, et de hoc XXII capitulo. The first is divided into two. For Prima dividitur in duas. Quia first, he treats of Christ’s glory; primo agitur de gloria Christi; second, of the persecutors’ indignation, at and the chief priests and scribes, seeing. secundo de persecutorum indignatione, ibi videntes autem principes sacerdotum et scribae et cetera. Concerning the first, three things: Circa primum tria. first is set out Christ’s glory, which was displayed on the road; Primo ponitur gloria Christi quae fuit in via exhibita;
