Lectio 4 Lecture 4 The shoot of justice 33:14 Ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus, et suscitabo verbum bonum, quod locutus sum ad domum Israel, et ad domum Juda. 33:14 Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that I shall stir up the good word that I spoke to the house of Israel, and to the house of Judah. 33:15 In diebus illis, et in tempore illo germinare faciam David germen justitiae, et faciet judicium, et justitiam in terra. 33:15 In those days, and at that time, I will make to spring forth for David the shoot of justice, and he shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. 33:16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Israel shall dwell confidently; and this is the name that they shall call him: the Lord our just one. 33:17 For thus says the Lord: there shall not perish from David a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel. 180. Here is provided the consolation with regard to the kingdom and the priesthood. et primo promittitur utriusque restitutio; First, the restoration of both is promised; secundo ponitur promissionis confirmatio, ibi, et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam. second is given the confirmation of the promise, at and the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah (Jer 33:19). Circa primum duo. Concerning the former, there are two points. Primo promittit restaurationem regni; First, he promises the restoration of the kingdom; secundo sacerdotii, ibi, et de sacerdotibus, et de Levitis non interibit vir. second, of the priesthood, at and of the priests and Levites there shall not perish a man (Jer 33:18). Circa primum tria. Concerning the former, there are three points. First, he indicates the appropriateness of the time: behold, the days are coming, of grace, that I shall stir up—I shall fulfill—the good word, which I promised concerning the restoration of the kingdom. And the children of Judah shall be gathered, and the children of Israel likewise, and they shall appoint for themselves one head, and he shall go up from the land (Hos 1:11). Which was fulfilled in Christ. Et faciet judicium: in primo adventu pro mundo, in secundo de mundo, justitiam, docens verbo, implens in se facto, et in aliis gratiae dono. Psalm. 118: feci judicium, et justitiam. Second, the nature of the kingdom with regard to the nobility of its ruler: in those days, I will make to spring forth for David the shoot of justice, Christ, who is justice itself. A rod shall go forth from Jesse, and a flower shall come up from his root (Isa 11:1). And he shall execute judgment, in his first coming, on behalf of the world; in his second coming, to the world; justice, teaching by word, and fulfilling in himself by deed, and in others by the gift of grace. I have done judgment and justice (Ps 118:121). . . Dominus justus noster. Psalm. 118: justus es, Domine, et rectum judicium tuum. And with regard to the usefulness of the ruler for the salvation of the people: in those days shall Judah be saved, with regard to those who believed in his first coming and shall believe in his second. I shall save them by the Lord their God (Hos 1:7). In the security of peace: and Israel shall dwell confidently. My people shall dwell in the beauty of peace, and the tabernacles of confidence, and in abundant rest (Isa 32:28). And in the confession of the true faith: and this is the name . . . the Lord our just one. Just are you, O Lord, and righteous is your judgment (Ps 118:137). Third, he speaks of the duration of the kingdom: for thus says the Lord: there shall not perish from David a man, Christ and his kingdom. His power is an everlasting power, which shall not be taken away, and his a kingdom which shall not be destroyed (Dan 7:14). Lectio 5 Lecture 5 Restoration of the priesthood 33:18 Et de sacerdotibus, et de Levitis non interibit vir a facie mea, qui offerat holocautomata, et incendat sacrificum, et caedat victimas omnibus diebus. 33:18 And of the priest and Levites there shall not perish a man from before my face, to offer holocausts, and to burn sacrifices, and to slay offerings every day: 181. Hic ponit restaurationem sacerdotii. Psal. 109: tu es sacerdos in aeternum secundum ordinem Melchisedech. Et membra sua reges et sacerdotes fecit. Apoc. 5: fecisti nos Deo nostro regnum et sacerdotes. Eph. 5: seipsum obtulit hostiam Deo in odorem suavitatis. Et membra ipsius, spirituales hostias Deo offerre facit. Ezech. 44: sacerdotes et levitate filii Sadoch, qui custodierunt caeremonias sanctuarii mei, cum errarent filii Israel a me: ipsi accedent ad me, ut ministrant mihi, et stabunt in conspectu meo, ut offerant mihi adipem et sanguinem: ait Dominus Deus. 181. Here, he speaks of the restoration of the priesthood. And as the kingdom is restored in Christ himself and in his members, so also the priesthood. For inasmuch as he is a king, he is also a priest. You are priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek (Ps 109:4). And he made his members kings and priests. You have made us a kingdom and priests for our God (Rev 5:10). He offered himself as an offering to God, as a pleasing fragrance (Eph 5:2). And he makes his members offer spiritual victims to God. The priests and the Levites, the sons of Zadok, who kept the ceremonies of my sanctuary when the children of Israel wandered from me, they shall draw near to me to minister unto me, and they shall stand in my sight to offer me fat and blood, says the Lord God (Ezek 44:15). Lectio 6 Lecture 6 Covenant like the heavens 33:19 Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam, dicens: 33:19 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: 33:20 haec dicit Dominus: si irritum potest fieri pactum meum cum die, et pactum meum cum nocte, ut non sit dies et nox in tempore suo; 33:20 thus says the Lord: if my covenant with the day can be broken, and my covenant with the night, that there should not be day and night in their time, 33:21 et pactum meum irritum esse poterit cum David servo meo, ut non sit ex eo filius qui regnet in throno ejus et Levitae, et sacerdotes ministri mei. 33:21 so may my covenant with David my servant also be broken, that he should not have a son to rule upon his throne, and with the Levites and priests my ministers. 33:22 As the stars of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea be measured, so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites my ministers. 182. Hic ponitur promissionis confirmatio: 182. Here is given the confirmation of the promise: et primo ex creaturarum duratione: et irritum potest fieri pactum meum cum die, quasi dicat: non potest esse irritum usque ad finem mundi. Psalm. 88: ponam in saeculum saeculi semen ejus, et thronum ejus sicut dies caeli. first, from the duration of created things: if my covenant with the day can be broken; it is as though he were saying, “It cannot be broken until the end of the world.” I shall establish his seed forever, and his throne as the days of heaven (Ps 88:30). Second, their multitude: as the stars of heaven cannot be numbered, except by God alone; so is the number of the elect known only to God. I shall multiply your seed like the stars of heaven, and like the sand which is on the shore of the sea (Gen 22:17). Lectio 7 Lecture 7 The enemy contradicted 33:23 Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam, dicens: 33:23 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: 33:24 numquid non vidisti quid populus hic locutus sit dicens: duae cognationes quas elegerat Dominus abjectae sunt: et populum meum despexerunt, eo quod non sit ultra gens coram eis? 33:24 have you not seen what this people has spoken, saying: the two families which the Lord had chosen are cast off; and they have despised my people, such that it is no longer a nation before them? 33:25 Haec dicit Dominus: si pactum meum inter diem et noctem et leges caelo et terrae non posui; 33:25 Thus says the Lord: if I have not established my covenant between day and night, and given my laws to heaven and earth; 33:26 equidem et semen Jacob, et David servi mei projiciam, ut non assumam de semine ejus principes seminis Abraham, Isaac et Jacob. Reducam enim conversionem eorum, et miserebor eis. 33:26 surely I will also cast off the seed of Jacob, and of David my servant to take any of his seed to be rulers of the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for I will bring back their captivity, and shall have mercy on them.
