Caput 19 Chapter 19 Perfectio Christiana Christian Perfection Lectio 1 Lecture 1 Praecepta Moralia Moral Precepts 19:1 Et factum est cum consummasset Iesus sermones istos, migravit a Galilaea, et venit in fines Iudaeae trans Iordanem, [n. 1544] 19:1 And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these words, that he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judea, beyond Jordan. [n. 1544] 19:2 et secutae sunt eum turbae multae, et curavit eos ibi. [n. 1546] 19:2 And great multitudes followed him, and he healed them there. [n. 1546] 19:3 Et accesserunt ad eum Pharisaei tentantes eum, et dicentes: si licet homini dimittere uxorem suam quacumque ex causa? [n. 1547] 19:3 And there came to him the Pharisees tempting him, and saying: is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? [n. 1547] 19:4 Qui respondens ait eis: non legistis, quia qui fecit ab initio, masculum et foeminam fecit eos? [n. 1548] 19:4 Answering, he said to them: have you not read, that he who made man from the beginning, made them male and female? [n. 1548] 19:5 Et dixit: propter hoc dimittet homo patrem et matrem, et adhaerebit uxori suae, et erunt duo in carne una. [n. 1552] 19:5 And said: for this cause will a man leave father and mother, and will cleave to his wife, and they two will be in one flesh. [n. 1552] 19:6 Itaque iam non sunt duo, sed una caro. Quod ergo Deus coniunxit, homo non separet. [n. 1553] 19:6 Therefore, now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder. [n. 1553] 19:7 Dicunt illi: quid ergo Moyses mandavit dari libellum repudii, et dimittere? [n. 1555] 19:7 They say to him: why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce, and to put away? [n. 1555] 19:8 Ait illis: quoniam Moyses ad duritiam cordis vestri permisit vobis dimittere uxores vestras: ab initio autem non fuit sic. [n. 1556] 19:8 He said to them: because Moses by reason of the hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. [n. 1556] 19:9 Dico autem vobis, quia quicumque dimiserit uxorem suam, nisi ob fornicationem, et aliam duxerit, moechatur; et qui dimissam duxerit, moechatur. [n. 1558] 19:9 And I say to you, that whoever puts away his wife, unless it be for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries her who is put away, commits adultery. [n. 1558] 19:10 Dicunt ei discipuli eius: si ita est causa homini cum uxore, non expedit nubere. [n. 1562] 19:10 His disciples say to him: if the case of a man with his wife is so, it is not expedient to marry. [n. 1562] 19:11 Qui dixit illis: non omnes capiunt verbum istud, sed quibus datum est. [n. 1564] 19:11 He said to them: all men do not take this word, but they to whom it is given. [n. 1564] 19:12 Sunt enim eunuchi, qui de matris utero sic nati sunt: et sunt eunuchi, qui facti sunt ab hominibus: et sunt eunuchi, qui seipsos castraverunt propter regnum caelorum. Qui potest capere, capiat. [n. 1566] 19:12 For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men, and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He who can take, let him take it. [n. 1566] 19:13 Tunc oblati sunt ei parvuli, ut manus eis imponeret, et oraret; discipuli autem increpabant eos. [n. 1573] 19:13 Then little children were presented to him, that he should impose hands upon them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them. [n. 1573] 19:14 Iesus vero ait eis: sinite parvulos, et nolite eos prohibere ad me venire; talium est enim regnum caelorum. [n. 1577] 19:14 But Jesus said to them: allow the little children, and do not forbid them to come to me, for the kingdom of heaven is for such. [n. 1577] 19:15 Et cum imposuisset eis manus, abiit inde. [n. 1578] 19:15 And when he had imposed hands upon them, he departed from there. [n. 1578] 19:16 Et ecce unus accedens ait illi: Magister bone, quid boni faciam, ut habeam vitam aeternam? [n. 1579] 19:16 And behold one came and said to him: good Master, what good should I do that I may have life everlasting? [n. 1579] 19:17 Qui dixit ei: quid me interrogas de bono? Unus est bonus, Deus. Si autem vis ad vitam ingredi, serva mandata. [n. 1581] 19:17 He said to him: why do you ask me concerning good? One is good, God. But if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments. [n. 1581] 19:18 Dicit illi: quae? Iesus autem dixit: non homicidium facies, non adulterabis, non facies furtum, non falsum testimonium dices, [n. 1584] 19:18 He said to him: which? And Jesus said: do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness. [n. 1584] 19:19 honora patrem et matrem et diliges proximum tuum sicut teipsum. [n. 1584] 19:19 Honor your father and your mother and, love your neighbor as yourself. [n. 1584] 19:20 Dicit illi adolescens: omnia haec custodivi a iuventute mea, quid adhuc mihi deest? [n. 1586] 19:20 The young man said to him: all these I have kept from my youth, what is still wanting to me? [n. 1586] 19:21 Ait illi Iesus: si vis perfectus esse, vade, vende omnia quae habes, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in caelo, et veni, sequere me. [n. 1589] 19:21 Jesus said to him: if you will be perfect, go sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come follow me. [n. 1589] 19:22 Cum audisset autem adolescens verbum, abiit tristis: erat enim habens multas possessiones. [n. 1599] 19:22 And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad, for he had great possessions. [n. 1599] 19:23 Iesus autem dixit discipulis suis: amen dico vobis, quia dives difficile intrabit in regnum caelorum. [n. 1600] 19:23 Then Jesus said to his disciples: amen, I say to you, that a rich man will hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. [n. 1600] 19:24 Et iterum dico vobis: facilius est camelum per foramen acus transire, quam divitem intrare in regnum caelorum. [n. 1602] 19:24 And again I say to you: it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. [n. 1602] 19:25 Auditis autem his, discipuli mirabantur valde, dicentes: quis ergo poterit salvus esse? [n. 1603] 19:25 And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered very much, saying: who then can be saved? [n. 1603] 19:26 Aspiciens autem Iesus dixit illis: apud homines hoc impossibile est; apud Deum autem omnia possibilia sunt. [n. 1605] 19:26 And Jesus looking, said to them: with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. [n. 1605] 19:27 Tunc respondens Petrus dixit ei: ecce nos reliquimus omnia, et secuti sumus te, quid ergo erit nobis? [n. 1607] 19:27 Then Peter answering, said to him: behold we have left all things, and have followed you; what therefore will we have? [n. 1607] 19:28 Iesus autem dixit illis: amen dico vobis, quod vos qui secuti estis me, in regeneratione, cum sederit Filius hominis in sede maiestatis suae, sedebitis et vos super sedes duodecim, iudicantes duodecim tribus Israel. [n. 1609] 19:28 And Jesus said to them: amen, I say to you, that you, who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man will sit on the seat of his majesty, you also will sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel. [n. 1609] 19:29 Et omnis qui reliquit domum, vel fratres, aut sorores, aut patrem, aut matrem, aut uxorem, aut filios, aut agros propter nomen meum, centuplum accipiet, vitam aeternam possidebit. [n. 1616] 19:29 And every one who has left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will possess life everlasting. [n. 1616] 19:30 Multi autem erunt primi novissimi, et novissimi primi [n. 1619] 19:30 And many who are first, will be last, and the last will be first. [n. 1619] 1543. Supra ostensum est quomodo veniendum est ad vitam aeternam per communem viam; hic docet quomodo veniendum est per viam perfectionis, quae tangitur quantum ad duo: quantum ad continentiam, et quantum ad paupertatem voluntariam. 1543. Above, it was shown how one comes to eternal life by the common way; here he teaches how one comes by the way of perfection, which is touched upon with regard to two things: with regard to abstinence, and with regard to voluntary poverty.
